{"id":1079,"date":"2016-01-01T15:24:44","date_gmt":"2016-01-01T20:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/regina-whipp.com\/blog\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2015-12-17T15:38:12","modified_gmt":"2015-12-17T20:38:12","slug":"windows-10-my-2-cents-worth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regina-whipp.com\/blog\/?p=1079","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10 my 2 cents worth&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been *playing* with Windows 10 for about a month and half now.\u00a0 Since then I have removed the ability to upgrade any other machine to Windows 10.\u00a0 Says a lot right?\u00a0 However, my reasons for not wanting to upgrade the other machines is not because there was any problem with the in-place upgrade, hardware conflicts or any other issues others are seeing.\u00a0 So why?<\/p>\n<p>1.<\/p>\n<p>I have older programs that run on Windows 7 64 bit but will not run on Windows 10 64 bit.\u00a0 Not sure why but having tried to load a few of them and trying to get them to run was good enough for me.\u00a0 This is a HUGE issue as I use those programs frequently enough that I would need two machines running and then be transferring files back and forth, no sense in that.<\/p>\n<p>Third party drivers that have not been upgraded will cause major, crippling issues.\u00a0 Am I supposed to replace all my equipment, really?<\/p>\n<p>To boot, there is no Windows 10 Upgrade Tool to tell which programs\/hardware are incompatible, nope, it just uninstalls it or breaks your machine, really?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Segoe UI; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/regina-whipp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Recycle2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"158\" \/><\/span>2.<\/p>\n<p>Having a machine update on its own is disturbing.\u00a0 We all have come to know *Patch Tuesday* as a *Let me see what\u2019s broken now Tuesday*.\u00a0 Spending the day trying to figure out which update did what causes me serious downtime.\u00a0 And then to add to my stress\u2026 waiting another week (or more) for a fix is beyond crazy.\u00a0 Should one just hang out a shingle\u2026 *Business closed due to Windows updates, will reopen when fixed!*, really?<\/p>\n<p>3.<\/p>\n<p>Installation of Office 2016 Click-to-Run, in some cases, removes Office 2013.\u00a0 Umm, as a developer that supports ALL versions of Office, this is a huge inconvenience.\u00a0 I either need a virtual machine or I have to switch to the .MSI installation or I\u2019m back to two machines running.\u00a0 Even two machines is an issue, what if I go to a Client that has both?\u00a0 What then?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4.<\/p>\n<p>Widgets \u2013 I have family and clients all over the world.\u00a0 Calling them can be challenging with all the different Time Zones, so\u2026 on my Windows 7 Desktop sits clocks for each location of my family, no can do in Windows 10 with buying a bunch of different clocks.\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p>On the same note, I kept the weather widget, just for fun so I can also see the weather where they are, so again\u2026 really?<\/p>\n<p>5.<\/p>\n<p>Cortana \u2013 I do not want some artificial *intelligence* peeking at my Contacts or my eMails.\u00a0 I do not want it remembering where I searched.\u00a0 On that same note, this should not be an hour exercise to turn off.\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p>6.<\/p>\n<p>Mail tile that shows me an envelope with a number, really?\u00a0 You can get a live feed from Twitter (when it\u2019s working) but you can\u2019t get a live feed for my incoming mail.\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p>7.<\/p>\n<p>Flip 3D gone.\u00a0 Loved that and made it so much easier when, if you\u2019re like me, you 10+ windows open.\u00a0 It was in my top 5 reasons for moving to Windows 7.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m back to using my keyboard, really?<\/p>\n<p>8.<\/p>\n<p>Flat Icons \u2013 Feel like we went back to the 1980\u2019s or is the 1990\u2019s, really?<\/p>\n<p>9.<\/p>\n<p>Renaming of Programs on Program Apps menu and I still can\u2019t figure out how to move them around, I don\u2019t want them in ALPHA order and I don\u2019t want Tiles.\u00a0 There is a system my madness and now doing what I do requires extra clicks.\u00a0 On that same note, what happened to right mouse click &gt; Send To Desktop?\u00a0 I want my Shortcuts on my Desktop.\u00a0 I have about 30 of them there now and I use them.\u00a0 To do that in Windows 7 one has to navigate to the actual file, really?<\/p>\n<p>10.<\/p>\n<p>Edge \u2013 Why?\u00a0 Just tell me why because I hate it, quickly installed Internet Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>While I understand the issues that go with supporting multiple versions of anything, whether it be Windows or Office and that Microsoft may not want to do it but there are those of us that still do it.\u00a0 It\u2019s our business.\u00a0 So for Office, a choice should be an option as it was in previous versions of Office.\u00a0 For Windows 10, at a minimum, let us choose whether we want without having to jump thru hoops to say no and let us choose whether we want to install updates\/patches automatically or not.\u00a0 Again, all which was available in previous versions of Office and Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Just in case you\u2019re interested, my opinion of Windows 10\u2026<br \/>\nSlick UI \u00a0(Yep, that&#8217;s it!)<\/p>\n<p>If you have not upgraded yet and still want to, a few things I would suggest\u2026<br \/>\nConfirm your hardware is compatible \u2013 That little icon that says your machine is ready is not quite accurate.\u00a0 Do your own research by either visiting the manufacturer\u2019s website or going to the Microsoft Forums and searching.<\/p>\n<p>Visit\u2026<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/windows-10-specifications\" target=\"_blank\">Windows 10 Specifications<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Known-issues-with-Office-and-Windows-10-28d56d84-c16c-4763-8eac-e51e05a37a16?ui=en-US&amp;rs=en-US&amp;ad=US\" target=\"_blank\">Known issues with Office and Windows 10<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do the same for your software, especially if it\u2019s older software.\u00a0 The fact that it runs on Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit is not a prerequisite for it running on Windows 10.\u00a0 This has been especially problematic for Anti-Virus software.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re on a metered connection be careful, see\u2026<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/enable-metered-connection-to-delay-windows-10-updates-1723316525\">http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/enable-metered-connection-to-delay-windows-10-updates-1723316525<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, this won\u2019t help for the initial download.\u00a0 You will need to figure out a plan yourself to get it initially installed.<\/p>\n<p>Connection speed \u2013 I have a relatively fast connection, 100 mbps, so my download and install was done in less than an hour.\u00a0 Bare that in mind when getting ready to download and install.<\/p>\n<p>After it installs the password I did have set was no longer valid.\u00a0 Instead I say my eMail and that is the password it wanted, ugh.\u00a0 I did change it that\u00a0which does not affect your password to your eMail but some warning would have been nice as that is not the eMail I would have chosen.\u00a0 (I guess I don\u2019t understand why it couldn\u2019t leave my previously supplied password.)<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>Third party tool <\/strong><em>(most effective)<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ultimateoutsider.com\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\">GWX Control Panel<\/a> app<\/p>\n<p>OR&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manual<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is what I did to stop the nagging and the attempts to download&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Uninstall these updates (found in the Microsoft Windows section):<\/p>\n<p><strong>KB2952664<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>KB2976978 <\/strong><em>(usually found on Windows 8.x machines)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>KB2990214<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>KB3021917<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>KB3035583<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>KB3044374 <\/strong><em>(usually found on Windows 8.x machines)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>KB3068708<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do <strong>NOT <\/strong>reboot when it asks you.\u00a0 After you are done go to <strong>Windows Update <\/strong>and search for updates, and you will see them listed again.
